When Alaska and Hawaii were being considered for statehood in the 1950's, more than 1,500 designs were spontaneously submitted to the president. One of these proposals was submitted as a school project by 17-year old Roberg G. Heft. Back in school, however, he received a B- for the project. After discussing the grade with his teacher, it was agreed that if Congress accepted the flag, the grade would be reconsidered. Let's just say he got an A.
